I have been no mail for a very long time. In my off duty time earlier this
week I read a book called The Sister Circle. It has no relation at all to
lactation. However, I realized again that I rely on all of you as sisters
(and some brothers) and learn a lot from you. I have been lurking and
reading for the last week or so.

Janice, than you for your referral to the Breastfeeding Task Force of
Greater Los Angeles website. I will likely use that handout plus many
other things. It is so easy to help just one mother at a time and so hard
to get invoved with the larger picture of advocacy, though I am trying. We
have a meeting this Thursday of the White Mountains Breastfeeding Promotion
Task Force, which I am trying to get going to help all women in the White
Mountains instead of the few I can personally touch. I am hoping to have
individuals from both area hospitals and several area doctors offices
involved as well as the tribal and non-tribal WIC agencies. The multiple
activities of that busy task force in LA can be an example to us.

I have lived on a rural reservation for 11 years and have worked for Apache
Diabetes Wellness Center for almost 7 years promoting breastfeeding. In
2006 I was actually able to add our gold standard initials to my name. I
have missed you all and look forward to gaining much from my ongoing
interaction with you all.

[I thought this was an interesting advocacy tool - you could hand these out
at prenatal classes or where ever you are in contact with moms. It teaches
them the standard of breastfeeding care, to expect from their hospital, and
also how to advocate for themselves.

This was created and shared by the Breastfeeding Task Force of Greater Los
Angeles. Contact [log in to unmask] if you have questions, or would
like
to modify this for your own health region.
