A pregnant woman who booked into our hospital today stated that she wasn't sure
if she could breastfeed or not. She stated that her grandmother had tried to breast feed her first six children and all of these had died because of the breast milk. She apparently then went on to formula feed a further seven children all of whom survived. A doctor at the time tested her milk and found a very high sodium content which was thought to have contributed to the babies deaths. The pregnant woman stated that she formula fed her first baby because of this background, however her current Obstetrician has offered to test her breast milk to see if she has the same problem. Can anyone shed any further light on this subject or has anyone else encountered this in their practice ?
