To those that offered suggestions:
Actually mom and baby are together (not at separate hospitals as in the case
Diane mentioned). They went home yesterday nursing well on shield even though
this was not helping the first day. Mom will continue to offer breast without
shield and if needed, try removing after a few minutes. Baby's output was
within expectations for 2 days old. Doc is following with a weight check in 4
days and my co-workers will be following by phone in 2 days. (I will be out of
town or I would follow myself.) Baby seemed to have better control of the
tongue by the second day whereas the first day it seemed to have a mind of it's
own! Mom is very motivated and remains calm through all the working with
baby-definitely a plus. And baby's doc is not one of those to throw formula at
every little hitch. I am hoping this will be one of those cases where time and
patience allow the baby to get it all together. I will pass on Barbara's
suggestion of prone position if things aren't progressing. And I'll keep that
in mind if I run into one of these again.
This is the kind of thing LN is so great for-a chance to pick 1600+ minds when
you draw a blank!

P.S. OT I couldn't figure out why I had an urge to chuckle when I first saw the
antics of this tongue. I finally figured it out. There is a guy (Moonie the
Magnificent) who performs at Renaissance Faires that in part of his act his
tongue starts acting up and he keeps trying to grab it and shove it back in his
mouth. Sounds silly, but it is actually hilarious. I wonder if this baby is
related (TIC).
