I always thought the reason one didn't warm formula or breast milk in the
microwave is because the fat molecules get hotter faster and retain heat
longer than the watery portions -- so the liquid may feel "warm" on the
wrist, but include tiny drops of much hotter fat that could burn the baby's
mouth. Since both formula and breast milk have fat, neither should be
heated in the microwave. When my youngest went to day care at 13 months, he
got water or juice in his sippee cup and skipped formula/expressed breast
milk for the six hours a day he was there.
