I am not doing any of this mathematically, but this case does not add up. If
the mother became pregnant and her milk dried up, why then did the older
baby transfer "60cc at each feed????" This to me says there were several
feeds. Generally with a low supply the milk transfer is quite low, maybe
less than 30cc.
Is the child taking other foods? A dietician or nutritionist could add up
all the calories from foods, drinks, and breastfeedings, and do a simple
calculation to see if the child is getting enough. This child lost over 3
lbs.
It does not seem to be a malabsorption type of problem because the baby
"gained beautifully on the supplements." Perhaps since the baby was
hospitalized the mother had the time to feed the baby nice long feeds.
Perhaps at home, if she is too busy, she is shortening feeds, or not
responding to cues, or giving a pacifier, or low calorie foods, if any. It
seems she needs counseling on managing her time and making sure nutrient
rich foods are available or making sure she has time to nurse often.
The child could also be anemic or zinc deficient, I'm sure they've checked
that while hospitalized. Again, appropriate nutrients should be available. I
hope a bf-friendly nutritionist was or can be consulted.
