How lovely, Catharine.  I wish more world leaders would take this type of stand on breastfeeding.  Thank you for sharing.

Subject: BF recommendations, duration, Pope John Paul II


In the days following the illness and death of Pope
John Paul II, I was reminded that he had made an
official public statement regarding breastfeeding.  I
went and looked that up and thought lactnetters might
appreciate reading it.  I don't mean to push religion
on this list, only to point out that this world leader
of the Catholic church had, a decade ago, addressed
some very salient points and encouraged Catholic
mothers to nourish their own infants, for *up to two
years and beyond*.  I'm not personally Catholic, and
again, I'm not sharing this for religious purposes,
but I was impressed with the sensitivity to the needs
and challenges of women and children as well as the
scientific awareness of breastfeeding benefits.
