Hello everyone,
I have a question for those of you with some
pediatric expertise.
My sister-in-law took her 9 week old in for her
2 month check up today and the doctor recommended a
rotavirus shot. It is a series of three
shots at about 2,4, and 6 months to prevent (or at
least reduce the seriousness of) diarrhea illness.
The literature that my sister-in-law brought
home indicated that this disease is fairly
common, hard to get rid of, potentially serious,
more common among babies in day care, lots
of kids get it by the time they are four and the
vaccine only works on this diarrhea illness, not others.
My niece is exclusively breastfed and at home with
Mom and Dad for now. No plans for day care in the
immediate future. Does she need this vaccine?
Any down sides to the vaccine besides the usual slight
fever and crankiness?
I thought that by kid #4 and 12 years in the
perinatal health business I would have at least
heard of all the common childhood illnesses. This vaccine
wasn't recommended when my 2 1/2 year old was an infant.
Is it that new?
Any info. would be helpful.
  Thanks,
    Naomi Bar-Yam
