Karleen, I have never read anything in the LLL literature (e.g, LEAVEN, NEW
BEGINNINGS or LLLI-published materials) which would lead me to tell a mother
that it is not possible to teach an older baby to breastfeed. There is so
little literature available on this topic. I will say that I encouraged my
sister-in-law to consider adoptive breastfeeding when she adopted an older
baby from China. I gave her a copy of the LLL booklet ("Nursing the Adopted
Baby") on adoptive nursing, I photocopied the chapters on relactation and
adoptive nursing from the BREASTFEEDING ANSWER BOOK for her and encouraged
her to attend LLL meetings in her area. That was more than five years ago.

I believe the newly revised BREASTFEEDING ANSWER BOOK is even more
supportive of adoptive nursing in that it has a more optimistic outlook on
the mother's ability to provide a milk supply for her baby in various
situations. When I am asked about adoptive breastfeeding now, I share
LLLI-published materials with the mom such as Diana West's "Breastfeeding
After Reduction" since it has a wealth of information about galactalogues.
I would also refer the mom to Darillyn Starr's story that was published in
LLL's magazine NEW BEGINNINGS in the Sep - Oct 1993 issue (see
http://www.lalecheleague.org/NB/NBSepOct93p135.html).

I have learned so much about the ability of older babies to learn how to
latch on from reading your posts to this list, Karleen, as well as the posts
from Darillyn on this same topic. I remember reading that you are
considering writing a book on this topic and I hope you will consider
submitting it to the LLL Book Evaluation Committee when it is published!
