Yesterday was an amazing day...and I wanted to share it with all of you!

For the last two years Monique Sims, a very passionate breastfeeding
supporter, RD supervisor for WIC, MPH, and a doctoral student has been
developing a research project about a way to develop a community of support
for the African American women in our area. As this WILL be published, it
will be part of the future body of knowledge from which we can all benefit.

Yesterday was the culmination of this project - and I hope only "stage 2" of
a continuing program to address the disparities in breastfeeding which lead
to Health Disparities among African Americans.

The project started by her developing a great deal of positive "vibes" by in
approaching large churches, educating the leaders in the church, training
volunteers using the Peer Counselor program from the state of California,
and culminating in a very well-planned "baby shower" where African American
couples come to learn about pregnancy, childbirth, relationships AND (by the
way) breastfeeding. LOTS of gifts, music, delicious food are all provided -
and agencies that offer services have booths (they must have their cards
punched at each booth to qualify for some of the raffles).

What totally "knocked my socks" off was yesterday's Keynote Speaker - the
pastor speaking to these couples - he was SO passionate about breastfeeding
I felt there was little for me to say after his talk! He spoke of the RISKS
of NOT breastfeeding - the importance of the MAN'S support (our peer
counselors INCLUDED men and one wore a baby carrier with a doll most of the
day) - the need for the community and employers to step up to the plate and
provide support - and the importance of women DEMANDING that they receive
the support they need! WOW - after days like that...I figure I can retire
soon!!! <grin>

This is the second time for this Baby Shower (called "A More Excellent Way"
based on a quote from the Bible) - and they plan to continue it yearly in
different cities and churches, during Black History Month (February).

...just HAD to give a plug to this great project.
