Rec'd this from my midwives list this morning. Thought I'd pass it along....

Dear Friend,

Northwest Environment Watch is looking for first-time breastfeeding moms, at
least 18 years of age, with infants between 2 and 8 weeks of age, who would
be willing to donate 2 half-cup samples of breastmilk for chemical testing.
These samples will be used in our project to measure "body burdens" --
levels of certain chemical contaminants in human bodies. We'll need samples
by September 15 at the latest, but preferably sooner. Moms will receive a
$100 check and a visit with a lactation consultant for their participation.
The breastmilk can be expressed at home, and the samples will be picked up
by a study coordinator.

We're looking for healthy moms over the age of 18 from the following areas:
* Vancouver, British Columbia
* Western Montana, especially the Missoula area
* Boise, Idaho
* Spokane, Washington
* Portland, Oregon

If you know of a mom who fits the bill, please invite her to call our
recruiting coordinator, Marcia David, toll free at (866) 670-2481, or email
her at mailto:[log in to unmask]

Our Project:
This is not a study designed to criticize breastfeeding -- research shows
that breastfeeding is best for both baby and mom. We're collecting breast
milk because it's high in fat, and is therefore a safe and convenient way of
testing for fat-soluble contaminants. We're particularly interested in PBDEs
(polybrominated diphenyl ethers), which are used as flame retardants in
computer plastics, polyurethane foams products, and textiles. Samples will
also be analyzed for a selection of PCBs and dioxins. Moms will be able to
get a copy of their test results.

The breast milk study is part of Northwest Environment Watch's index
project, with which we're monitoring the health of the Northwest's human and
natural communities. The index will be launched early in 2004. For more
information see: http://www.northwestwatch.org/topics/measuring.html

Please feel free to pass this notice on to others! Thanks so much.
