Nancy: I am so backed up with Lactnet that I only just found your post
from a month ago about the tragedy of the mother who went off her seizure
meds in order to breastfeed, and her baby drowned in the bath during
mother's seizure. You asked if there is anything known about seizure
meds and bf. I don't know if anyone answered, but I want to point out
that many of the most widely used anticonvulsants are AAP compatible with
breastfeeding, including dilantin (phenytoin), tegretol (carbamazepine),
depakote (valproic acid), and even phenobarbital is AAP "cause for
concern" but not outright contraindicated. Hope this helps in
counselling mothers with seizures in the future. Alicia. [log in to unmask]
