Kathy wrote in asking about a samll for dates baby and breastfeeding.
The only experience I have is personal. My last child, now 5, was born
term at 4.5 lb and was ina NICu for three weeks. The nursing in the
NICU is a long story, a combination of breastfeeding and pumping. When
I got home, I was worried about nipple ocnfusion etc etc. Frotunately,
I had a couple of friends who had ahd similar experiences. Their reaction
was to feed him as freqently as he asked and he would be fine. He
ate frequently a tthe beginning, playing catch up. He was fine. He is
still small for his age, probably always will be but is healthy. He
nursed for just over three years, still talks about it form time to time.
He slept in bed with us for aobut a year and in our room in a crib
til he was almost three, never had any problems adjusting. As I said
he is small;apparently SGA babies are often small but quite healthy and
dvelopmentally normal in all other ways. Hope this is helpful, or
at least encouraging.
