RE: << The mother is 37, mother of 2, and is currently breastfeeding her 2 year old several times a day... The mother has just been told by her doctor
that tests show she is in perimenopause, and that it is possible that her
extended breastfeeding is a CAUSE of this. He's told her to wean cold turkey (and that it "won't kill him"!). The mother refused and was quite angry and upset by the whole thing.

support her case before doing so.>>

I wonder why it is that we always seem to think we're the ones who have to come up with the evidence when a doc makes a recommendation to wean (or otherwise interfere with the breastfeeding relationship and lactation)? If a physician makes a recommendation that affects BF/lactation, then he/she should have evidence-based information to support that rec! If the mother wants to confront her doctor in a pleasantly assertive way, I'd suggest she call to let him know she's not been able to find info to support the intervention to wean but she would be extremely interested to read/review any research references he has regarding that recommendation in order to weigh risks-benefits.

Karen
