Hi all,

I wonder if someone can help me with a question concerning supplementation. I have searched the archives and cannot come up with much except concerning blood sugar (as an aside, my hospital is now supplementing newborns with sugars under 50! Thanks be to the breastfeeding gods that we don't do acuchecks on all babies). There was one entry on early supplementation but it did not address the issue of when or how much.

My question concerns this: If a healthy, term infant is born and will not go to breast, in fact does not seem desirous of eating at all due to meds, traumatic delivery, belly full of amniotic fluid, or whatever, how long should the baby be allowed to go before supplementation is necessary. I seem to recall from a seminar I went to years ago that a newborn requires only 12kcal/kg the first 24 hours of life. This situation came up today with the nurse pushing to supplement the baby at about 10 hours of age. She did try to supplement him with a bottle, which he refused so ultimately was syringe fed 15cc formula

Thanks,
Stacy Miller-Leonard, RN,MS,IBCLC
