Chris, I appreciate this info very much. Why is it that practitioners are
willing to overlook the recommendations of the manufacturer??? I have been
fighting this battle for years, and still have docs giving it, insisting it
is fine. The reason they give is they don't want the mom to get pregnant
prior to the 6 week check. Sounds pretty big-brotherly to me, AND scary.

 The emphasis
is on waiting 6 weeks so that the newborn isn't dosed a lot with depo via
milk (vs may inhibit lacation). The man i spoke with said that in some of
those early studies, clinicians didn't wait until 6 weeks for b/f but there
were no adverse effects on the kids, followed now to close to puberty.
However, no developmental delays said to him that they were receiving enough
nutrition. Unfortunately, i could make the same conclusion since it was not
clear when the depo was given (2 days pp or 4 wks are both earlier than the
6
wk reco) and it was not clear how long the moms exclusively breastfed. He
also mentioned that their new injection that you receive once a month has
the
same recommendation, strongly insisted upon by the FDA, that excl b/f wait 6
weeks and all other may receive within the first 5 days. Bottom line though
they support the clinicians weighting of risks:benefits, even though this
isn't printed on the package insert. At our hospital, the moms get 2 home
visits if they breastfeed, I wonder if giving it at the 2nd visit, shortly
after the milk comes in, would make a difference to the sensitivity of
alveolar cells to prolactin.
