If you go to:

http://www.waba.org.my/colloquium/programme.html

and scroll down to the two links to part one and two of Ellen Piwoz's
presentation in Arusha, at the WABA? UNICEF colloquium on hiv and infant
feeding in Sept 2002, you will see what Ellen P adn Jay Ross have made of
the research findings to date on breast conditions and hiv transmissions.
Yes, this incorporates Semba's research, Valerie. However, it is
interesting. What we need is more good studies, done by people who know
about breastfeeding -- I think we know that most of the hiv and bf research
has been done by people who don't understand very basic ideas about
breastfeeding.

In the discussion after the morning presentations, you will find:
"Breast health needs to be improved in general, not just in the PMTCT
context. Indeed, maternal health and nutrition in general are still
receiving far too low a priority. " Which echoes a strong strand of the
colloquium, as I experienced it.
