Hi All
We are one of the regional "CDP"s or regional coordinating sites for the National Breastfeeding Awareness Campaign, and a lot of pple have been asking us, what next?
It seems to me that if all of those of you who wrote letters to Tommy Thompson were to contact your local media with the story about the formula companies pressure changing the ads, that would be the best way to go. But I think we have to be careful. The Philadelphia Inquirer story was good but less pro breastfeeding than the New York Times story.
We have to be sure it doesn't get twisted into a crazy breastfeeders. RIght now, we have the media shift in our favor - everyone is aware that the pressure is coming from the formula companies. This lends our claims credibility. It would be nice to keep it clear that the AAP comments were tied in with half a million formula $$ per year. But we don't need to go over the top. Keep it calm - like someone else on lactnet said recently, give the formula cos enough rope and they will hang themselves. I am going to write something up to send to the papers - if people would like it posted on LactNet say so and I will
