Subject: RE: Math for June's question

Your point is well taken. I offered this in response to June's query
about a posted notice about the amount of 'supplement' to offer a
newborn who is not feeding well. The amount seemed too large and I
offered this as a way to estimate, based on baby's weight, what amount
baby needed based on both weight and the number of feedings offered. I
use this with babies I see, usually in the first weeks of life, for
mothers who are overly concerned or who have been told by their ped.
that baby is not gaining well. It does not go on indefinitely. After
the first weeks, output and weight gain are the best indicators of
adequate intake at breast.

Some mothers are pestered by relatives to know how much baby is taking -
- in one family it was almost a competition - - and this helps mothers
to deflect the pressure.

Thank you for responding to my Lactnet post. Diane
