Angela, regarding your Lactnet post about pumping for a premie:

Your recommendations were very good! Also:

Mom could power pump:
10 mins every hour while awake (up to 120 minutes per day if baby is not at breast at all) or she could pump 10minutes then wait 20-30 minutes, then pump 10 minutes again, then take a break for 1 1/2 hours. Mom can reduce pumping time as baby gets stronger and more effective at milk transfer. Remember, she must bring in the supply for a term baby, not just meet current needs.

Mom should use breast massage and hand expression with the pumping as in this link:

If she is willing/interested, she could consider goat's rue.

Mom could consider fenugreek and blessed thistle as recommended by Dr. Newman:

or domperidone:

One of my favorite sites is
http://www.mobimotherhood.org/MM/default.aspx

I also recommend paced bottle feeds for the supplements. Write back if you want a description of this. My recommendations are somewhat different than those found on the internet.

I understand that premies benefit from using a nipple shield in the beginning. I heard the research presented at a Hale/Hartmann Conference.

I hope this helps! Rowena
