Julie,
Sometimes it is very hard to be baby friendly with all the stuff that we are
required to do medically! What I have done at my hospital with the c/s
babies, who are also carried to the nsy by dad or s/o as they are closing mom,
the nsy does all of the admit requirements, except for the bath. In my
classes, I tell the parents to remind their nurse if they have a c/s they want
the bath to be delayed until after they have had a chance to breastfeed. This
seems to work well, of course you have your few insistant nurses who think
their way is the best and ignore that counsel, but a majority are doing it that
way and do see the difference in making that 1st real bonding/nursing session
a good one. We then return the baby to the nsy for it's bath while we are
getting mom transferred to her PP rm.

Most of our L&D staff is very good at letting mom hold baby skin to skin after
vag deliveries. For World Breastfeeding week I gave out a lot of the little
cirtificates that ICLA had in their packet which stated this "Thank you for your
contributions to the health of mothers and babies in your community by
welcoming babies softly; encouraging mothers to hold their babies skin-to-skin
after birth and keeping mother and babies togeather so they can breastfeed."
This small gesture seemed to mean a lot to a lot of the nurses. I even got a
few hugs from a few of the nurses who had a reputation of being hardened.

We still have a long ways to go, but in my institution I feel we have made
great strides!
