Subject: Urgent request, can't get on lactnet post page today

Hi Kathleen,

I'm desperately trying to post a message to Lactnet this morning, but my
computer can't find the page. I've tried the link I usually use from
the list, tried pasting the URL, but each time it times out. I'm
wondering if you can help me or post my message for me.

I'm receiving the posts, just can't seem to get on....

My message is:

For the past 6 months or so, our hospital has been providing handouts on
the risks of pacifier use and the risks of formula supplementation to
our breastfeeding mothers. The handouts, written by my supervisor, are
used only when mothers request one of those things and are used as a way
of giving them consistent, research-based information that they can
share with their families. Our nursing staff always gives them an "out"
by letting them know that it is a decision that only they can make and
that we will respect and work with them no matter what, but want to be
sure they have access to all the information before making their
decision.

We have not gotten any negative feedback from our patients or staff to
date. Our supervisor rounds on all patients and specifically asks if
they have any problems, concerns, questions etc. We also send patient
satisfaction surveys to everyone.

Our problem is, the OB physicians decided that these handouts are
"outrageous" and that we are "making their patients feel like inadequate
parents." They've demanded that they be taken off the unit. Our
supervisor, who is supportive, has agreed to arrange a meeting with the
chief of the OB department in order to discuss the situation. We have
no idea what triggered their reaction.

I've already spoken to Marsha Walker and have gotten some strategies for
the meeting. In addition, we have plenty of research to back up the
information on the handouts. What I'm wondering is if anyone can direct
me toward research about women making informed feeding decisions and the
whole guilt issue.

I'm not interested in having our information censored. I believe we
have a professional and ethical obligation to share this information
with women who express a desire to breastfeed. I need all the
ammunition I can get, especially if it comes from a source that a
physician would find "reputable".

Please feel free to e-mail me privately or post to the list.

Thanks!!
