I've been out of the country for a week, so am late responding to Pam's post
about re-testing and competency as an LC. The data are clear that
continuing education credits are not a good way of preserving or of
predicting current practice competency. The position of the IBLCE to
require re-testing at 10 years is actually the vanguard position in health
care competency monitoring and other professions are moving toward it. As
someone who re-tested this year, I know that even after many years of
continuous practice, I reviewed some of the basic stuff. The literature and
the science advances. Some of the stuff that was "state of the art" when I
first sat the exam is no longer so. Re-testing forces re-examination of the
literature. I used the ILCA Core Curriculum for Lactation Consultant
Practice (M. Walker, ed) as my basic review text and learned a lot.
