Dear friends,

Vicky asks about Williams Syndrome.
The specifics of Williams Syndrome make breastfeeding extra important. Due to the heart condition there is a increased infection risk; anti-infective properties of breastfeeding will protect the infant from this. The problems in the mouth (malocclusion, increased caries risk, weak oral muscle development) will all benefit greatly from as much and as long drinking at breast as possible. Mental retardation is also frequently seen in WS children and mom's milk and the act of drinking at breast will enable the child to fully develop what is has in her.
The hypercalcemia will, according to my information, only occur in the first 2 years and human milk is naturally low in calcium. Therefor, I see much more positive than negative in prolonged nursing for this child.

Warmly,

Gonneke, IBCLC, LLLL in sunny southern Netherlands
