Rob,
I have extensive literature research [and an actual IRB submitted study in
the works] related to overlaying and general bedding safety.

DO NOT lay a baby on a waterbed!!!  The suffocation occurs by virtue of the
bed's ability to conform so well to the shape of whatever is laying on it.
Most of the reports start with the baby on its back who somehow manages to
roll over face down.

I always tell my new parents this. [And I encourage baby sleeping with
parents on regular mattress if they are comfortable with this idea]
