I have a question concerning milk banks and the testing of breastmilk: What
kind of tests are done on the breastmilk before it is distributed,
especially raw milk?

I am on a midwifery list, this topic was discussed. Recently a mom was
discharged from the hospital after giving birth. Her baby was in the NICU,
she was pumping. She was sent home with some of her frozen breastmilk she
had stored at the hospital. She gave several oz. to her 2 yo son, then
realized it wasnt her milk. The bag had another woman's name on it. The mom
was real upset, the hospital said it wasn't necessary to worry or have the
milk tested, the other mom was fine. A lab was called to see if tests could
be run on the milk- these are the actual posts concerning this. (used with
permission)

>I just called my lab to see if they could do testing on the breast milk that
>was given to Ida's client's baby. The owner/head honcho that they finally
>transfered me to said that testing on breastmilk does not give meaningful
>results. Because of the large proteins that bind viruses, drugs, testing on
>breast milk would be too inaccurate. He recommended getting a blood sample
>from the donor.

And:
>This lab owner said that the results are meaningless when testing breast
>milk. I would have to interpret that to mean that milk bank testing of milk
>is meaningless too.
>
>Feel free to post that to the LC list.

What is your response to this? I am an aspiring LC and for my own info and
the midwifery list I would like to post an accurate response.
