SIDS Australia have been revising their information for parents (pamphlet
and online frequently asked questions (FAQ) ). They have been saying that
there is no evidence that breastfeeding is protective against SIDS (or not
enough evidence to add this to their information).
So, I suggested that the FAQ should be reworded (Weissingerized :-) )
I have been holding my breath to see if this would be approved by all the
various consultants - and yes, now it is online!
Parents can read that formula feeding increases the risk of respiratory and
gastro infections. See below.
I think this is quite a breakthrough to get a fairly conservative
organisation, who are trying not to upset anyone, to publish this. Thank you
Diane.

<Will bottle (formula) feeding increase the risk of SIDS?
There is no consistent evidence that bottle feeding increases the risk of
SIDS or that breastfeeding reduces the risk. However, everyone agrees that
breastfeeding is best for most babies.

There is strong research to show that bottle feeding increases the risk of
chest and tummy infections in the first year of life. Breastfeeding, on the
other hand, is known to help baby resist infections. >
