Hate to burst your bubble, but as breastfeeding is an ACTIVE effort on the
part of the infant, and not just someone force-feeding with a bottle, it
does
take more energy on the baby's part. I know NICU nurses who can
bottle-feed
a rock. Repeated studies have shown that premies of any age will take more
from the bottle than at breast - even with excellent lactation support and
help.

Dear Friends:
I am confused, and wonder if Dr. Wight will clarify.
I understand from Paula Meier's work, that bottle feeding lowers
temperature and oxygen saturation, and is more stressful for the infant. I also
understand that breastfeeding is an active process, both on the part of the
infant (who is physiologically equipped to coordinate suck/swallow/breathe at
breast) and on the part of the breast (that ejects milk).
How to reconcile these two concepts? How can breastfeeding be less
stressful AND require more energy?
A SLP that I did a short internship with said the difference came from
s2s. I have designed a study that no one will do, where a bottle-feeding
mother could feed her premature infant (being monitored) sometimes with standard
bottle-feeding style (both clothed) and and sometimes s2s. That way, each dyad
would serve as their own control, and the vital signs of the baby could be
observed to note any difference.
    warmly,
