An example of the different ways, helpful and unhelpful, that test weights
can be used. Several years ago I worked with a mother who lacked confidence
in her body's ability to feed her baby appropriately. She'd had infertility
problems. Even adopted a baby prior to conceiving. She was an engineer who
liked precise measurements. So one week-end I loaned her my good scale. She
did pre and post feed weights for 48 hours and noted how different the
amounts consumed were from feed to feed, but that baby took in an
appropriate amount over each 24 hour period. Also that baby gained weight
each day. Her confidence was boosted enormously by this experience.
Interestingly, because she had been so anxious, her pediatrician had made an
appointment for her to see another LC who was on her insurance plan. (He
didn't know me, and mother was paying me out of pocket.) At the consult,
the baby was expected to feed at a time when mother knew he was not
particularly hungry. Test weights were done. Because he took so little, the
LC made up a care plan suggesting routine supplementation after nursings.
Mother refused because she now knew better, having done 48 hours of test
weights herself. Baby did very well from then on because mother believed in
herself.
