"The most significant modern advance in the treatment of dehydration from
diarrhea is oral rehydration therapy (ORT)." From Gale Encyclopedia of
Childhood and Adolescence

How important are re-hydrating liquids for breastfed children? How many
breastfed children do need extra care as ORT of IV? I am talking about an
average healthy child.

From my own experience, whenever my son was sick (no very often), I was
prepared for a day of several days of hard work. I would find a very
comfortable place where I could sit all day and nurse, even if breastmilk
came right back up. Lots of towels, food and drink for me. Non-stop
nursing always helped my son recover and fight off infections. We never had
to use any drugs for diarrhea or any drugs for that matter for colds, flues
or such. I am not even sure we had ear infections, because we never had to
go the doctor.
