Just to pull a couple of threads together.

Recently I was waiting in an airport terminal to fly home from Adelaide
where I'd been at the Uni there photocopying copius amounts of references.
While I waited I read a paper that discussed supression of stress responses
in women who were lactating and suggested that this may be due to higher
prolactin levels (although they really didn't know exactly how it might
work). Just as I sat there reading a woman, about my age came over with her
two kids. One that was 6 and the other 12 months or so. I got talking to
the little girl and her Mum, they were flying to Perth and their flight had
been delayed, the mum had charge of the girls on her own, they were both
busy inquisitive little people and I could see that the mum might have been
a bit concerned that the trip was going to be difficult. The little one
went over to her Mum and helped herself to a breastfeed. I was suprised
because it's not the sort of thing you see every day in that context. I was
able to share with the mum what I was reading and that the fact that she
was breastfeeding would reduce her stress level in flying with her two
children.

We had a great talk about why breastfeeding is so good and she was able to
ask my opinion on breastfeeding such an 'old' baby. I think the mum came
away feeling confident after having talked to someone who thinks that she
was actually doing a good thing in breastfeeding her toddler and I felt
good too.

So how about promoting breastfeeding in airplanes as reducing the stress of
flight with toddlers and even giving them something to do.
