I second what Laurie said about the sad mom with the milk supply problems
who really wants to nurse. She could manage breastfeeding just like I, and
many, many other adoptive moms, do. For some reason, it seems to be easier
for people to see the benefits of nurturing at the breast with a smaller
milk supply and long term supplementing at the breast in an adoptive
situation than in a traditional one. ANY mom can nurse this way, regardless
of the reason that her milk supply is smaller. A supplementer can just be a
normal part of that dyad's nursing routine, and using it can become second
nature.

I know that there is concern that consistent use of a supplementer might
limit the mom;s milk production. However, in any situation where it is a
well established fact that a significant amount of supplement is needed, I
feel that being able to rely on a supplementer is essential, in order to
keep the experience positive, and enable mom to keep it up for a significant
period of time. To have to worry constantly, at each feeding, whether the
baby is getting enough to eat, or even whether he is taking an ounce more of
supplement that he would have to had, can prevent optimum nurturing, inhibit
let-down, and generally turn what should be a gratifying experience into
something less than positive, if not an ordeal. It is often helpful to
limit evaluations of what the milk supply is doing to once a week, or so,
and then be able to relax in between times.

I would suggest that this mom, and others in similar situations, visit the
Adoptive Breastfeeding Resource Website, where they can find other mothers
who can give them support, as well as practical advice.
