I teach Mom as we do the cross cradle hold that this is a LEARNING position.
I also teach her how to bring her arm around and turn it into a cradle hold
once baby is latched. But I have yet to find the cradle hold a good position
for learning for most first time mothers. Today in the Lactation Center I had
a consult with the Mom of a 2 week old. He has never latched on. She has
pumped and used bottles. Poor little guy has been getting 4-412 ounces per
feeding for at least a week now. So he has been comatose for nearly 4 hours after
each feeding. So I had lots of teaching to do. He latched for us after only
5 attempts. He, of course, doesn't want to open wide so we had to be patient.
I had Mom show me how she had been trying to latch him and, of course, it
was the cradle hold where his jaw was not dropping deep under the areola. He
couldn't sustain a latch. But BINGO in the cross cradle hold, a few attempts,
and he had it perfect! Eventually she will NOT have to use this hold to latch
him on and she will be able to nurse easily anywhere she goes but for a short
period of time she may need to use this to get him on properly.
