Just can't resist commenting on the doctor bashing, which I hope is about
done with as a discussion, but I want to add this: Since 9/16 I have
been working with a baby who was at birth wt at 2 mo old. When the family
practice physician saw the mom, he wanted to put the baby on formula, ASAP.
The mom's response was tears, but they insisted. She went out to get
formula and bottles, still teary, but remembered that WIC had offered help.
After talking with me, she called him back to tell him the measures we
would use to increase milk, and how we would measure the I & O. He agreed
that she did not have to use formula, but he would reevaluate the
situation in 4 days.
The baby gained 3 oz (and even I urged the use of formula via cup or SNS!)
He called me the evening after the visit to tell me the wt gain and to
ask exactly how we did it. He openly admitted that neither he nor his
nurse were familiar with an SNS. I explained exactly what I had been
doing each day, gave a summary of pumping and feeding routine as well as I
& O. His final comments to me were: Well, you are doing half of my job!
AND Give me your name again and phone # so I can reach you in the future
about other BF mothers.
Baby gained 3 more oz in the next three days by cont. BF and use of
8oz/d of formula. Hurrah for Dr. Ober's confidence and cooperation.
