This morning on Good Morning America, there was a segment on SIDS.
Specifically, that the use of a pacifier, together with back-sleeping, is
protective. Breastfeeding was given a passing mention. The emphasis was on
pacifier use, with a quick reference to using it only after breastfeeding
was established. Of course, this made it sound like mom would have to
choose to delay the introduction of the life-saving pacifier. Breastfeeding
was not on the list of ways to reduce the risk of SIDS.

Also interesting -- the spokeswoman (researcher?) said "we don't know why"
the pacifier offers protection. Interrupted sleep was mentioned. Could it
be, just maybe, that interrupting sleep for suckling (at mother's breast or
as an alternative, the paci) could be the factor, and not specifically the
pacifier. Lazy research.
