Hello Carol,

So sorry your daughter is having these difficulties. In my experience, the main issue would be volume. Ensure the baby is getting plenty of milk via direct bf, pumped ebm given with lactation aid (or other alternative method), donor milk, or formula. That size baby would need 20 ounces or more per day. You can use pre/post weights to check volume consumed, or mom can pump with a hospital grade pump in lieu of a feeding (gives an idea of breast capacity).

Perhaps mom's milk has lower fat though I doubt lower protein, however I would not suspect and have not seen that to be a major issue.

I have posted numerous times where I have seen babies pee/poop adequately, esp. in the early days, but later the poops decrease or baby doesn't poop after hospital discharge. That is why pee/poop is just one indicator of effective feeding or adequate intake, one must also look at the overall feeds, satiety, and weight patterns.

So back to the basics of making more milk: great latch, really frequent feeding, babywearing, expressing extra ebm, taking galactagogues. It is wise that you are also looking at mother's nutrition, that is important too.
