I've never heard of any immigrants to the US deliberately choosing formula
so that their kids would grow taller. I think most of them realize that
food is much more plentiful here, the water is cleaner, immunizations are
available free to those who are poor, antibiotics can cure their kids of
diseases that would kill them at home, and there isn't any civil war going
on. I don't think most people view greater height as something 'wonderful'
necessarily -- it just happens. I think most immigrants switch to
bottle-feeding here because it is obvious to anyone walking around that NO
ONE in the US ever breastfeeds there babies. I mean, you certainly never
see it anywhere, right? And they even advertise on TV that while breast
milk is best, Carnation is the VERY BEST. And the WIC program gives it away
free, because it is so important that babies have formula. [no flames, I'm
being sarcastic here. I know some WIC programs, like Texas', are very good
at promoting bf.] They are interested in fitting in, in being modern and
Western. So they give formula.

I read in a book once, and have repeated it so often that my children all
groan when I start . . . .

"If you have a roof over your head to keep you warm, food in your belly,
someone to love you, and nobody shooting at you -- then you have no reason
to gripe about anything."
