The condition she speaks of is called CHYLOTHORAX. It is actually a well
known complication of open heart surgery. In the center I work in, we see it
enough to know it the minute is raises its ugly head, but my view is jaded
since I "do" open hearts as a Peds ICU nurse.

Portagen (in the US) is the only acceptable formula, baby needs broken down
fats. I have seen this resolve in a few days or can take months. The baby I
know of currently has been on Portagen for 4months and her chylothorax
returns the minute she is put back on EBM or soy. She will stay on Portagen
for her first year, I believe. It is an unfortunate, unpredictable
complication. It is not related to surgeon skill level or ability. Open
heart surgeries have become very high tech and not many are fatal anymore.

Fondly,
Barb
