Occasionally, when a less skillful practitioner performs a frenotomy and
causes more than normal bleeding, a silver nitrate stick is used to cauterize
the tissue and stop bleeding.  This can leave a whitish, discolored area
where the procedure was done.  (Probably makes the mouth much sorer than
normal, too.  That stuff burns--alter all, that's what cautery is.)   If I
have any input into the referral, I suggest a group of oral surgeons here,
all of whom do a wonderful job.  Some of the peds refer to a couple of ped.
surgeons, who seem to have little experience with frenotomy, and those babies
occasionally get the silver nitrate treatment.
