I received a call from a woman who is 35 wks pregnant. She has a pituitary
tumor which is causing hyperprolactemia. She was placed on 5 mg Parlodel in
the morning and 5 mg in the evening. She became pregnant 1 month after being
placed on this medication and was kept on it throughout. Her question to me
is will this affect her ability to breastfeed and what affects does this have
on her infant. I've read from Hale '99, but still wonder if it is a
possibility for her. I understand the medication will lower the prolactin
levels and therefore suppresses lactation. But with someone experiencing
hyperprolactemia will it just bring it down to more normal levels? Or can
the dosage be altered to allow a sufficient milk supply? Any ideas would be
greatly appreciated.
