Hi! My name is Joy Anderson and I am a IBCLC in Private Practice in Perth,
Western Australia. I am also a Breastfeeding Counsellor with the Nursing
Mothers' Association of Australia. :-)

I have a 43 year old client with a 5 day old (first) baby, who is
experiencing painful feeding. The baby's attachment looks OK and her
nipples are not sore or traumatized. The pain seems to be under the areolar
area, at the base of the nipple. It only hurts when the baby compresses the
breast with each suck, and feels like a bruise. Although her milk has only
just come in and her breasts are quite firm, she reports that this pain has
been unchanged since the birth. The mother also has suffered for many years
with Raynaud's syndrome, including pain in the breasts and nipples even
before pregnancy. Could this have anything to do with adhesions under the
nipple, or the connective tissue in there?

Has anyone else had experience with this as it is a bit of a puzzle to me?
