Has the mother done the non-pharmaceutical steps that also deal with
hypertension:
weight loss
exercise
eliminate alcoholic beverages
sodium free (<500mg/day) diet?

These steps are compatible with breastfeeding and will generally
reduce or eliminate the need for medications.  In the last few years the
"wonder drugs" have made the lifestyle changes less popular but have not
eliminated their effectiveness.
