A mother delivered at our hospital two weeks ago, discharged over the
weekend and sent home told she should not breastfeed.......Here's the
story as best I know: Her history: She was having difficulty
conceiving due to a high prolactin level (900), was given med to lower,
mom conceived 6 mo. later. Present: delivered a healthy full term
baby. OB dr. ordered an MRI to rule out a tumor, and in the mean time
mom was told to pump and dump for 48 hrs. I did manage to give info
from Hale regarding injection for MRI, however dr decided it best to
follow x-ray's suggestion to pump and dump. MRI came back late that day
showing a small tumor. Mother then told because of the meds she would
be starting on in about two weeks to lower her prolactin levels, she
could not breastfeed. I discussed this briefly with another lc, and she
confirmed that this most likely was the case because breastfeeding would
increase prolactin level and mom needed to lower level.

With the discussion here in lactnet on prolactin receptors, milk
prolactin, serum prolactin, etc., I'm curious as to what you might think
of this situation. Waiting to hear from you. Thank you. Mary
