dear kim hansen,
I've had lots of experience with un-healing cracks or fissures. The problem
may be YEAST so try "Nystatin". If no one will treat go over the counter-
also soaking before feeding in warm water and after feeding in 1/2 water and
1/2 peroxide. If the nystatin is used try after each nursing X 24hrs and 4X's
day for 10 days .  Baby won't always have oral thrush, I know this because we
have a dermatologist doing cultures of nipples and finding yeast but baby
