Don't know if this will reach you in time.
I do find this to be one of the situations where shield may be a
temporary help if it helps keep the nipple in position in baby's
mouth-as long as baby doesn't bite through the shield.
I was surprised by the comment that you "aren't allowed to let
babies suck on our fingers any more". This can be such a useful
tool in our profession when used correctly! This means with a
gloved finger which some babies may not like, but far less invasive,
IMO that letting them suck on bottles or pacifiers. When mom not
avaialble, I would much rather see a baby suck on a finger, even
gloved, than a pacifier. Removing this tool from the LC would be
like telling a doctor he or she can't use a tongue depressor! Not
only can we find information that we often can't get (or verify) by
any other means, it can sometimes be used to help a baby overcome a
problem. Extensive suck training takes training on the part of the
person using it, but there are some simple "tricks" that can be used
by any of us and easily shown to the parents.
