Hi everyone!
I have started to work with the Childbirth Trust here in Basel and
they are a wonderful group. I am enjoying the interaction with many
different cultures.
I received a call yesterday from a mother with an interesting
situation, and thought I might be able to get some imput.
Hx. Mother said that she was told that she had high estrogen and that she
would never spontaneosly get pregnant. However she did become pregnant
unexpectedly. She was on bedrest the entire pregnancy with high blood
pressure which was treated only at the end with Labetalol. She was also
pre-eclampsic and borderline diabetic. The baby was born at 37 weeks, 3 kg
140 g. Apgar scores good. Starting pumping on day 1 with hospital grade
pump, baby had a slow start wth many bottles of EBM, but began nursing
fairly well and the milk supply was adequate. Baby gained 600 g at first
check-up.
When the baby was 4 weeks old, the mother had an increase menstrual flow,
which she interpreted as a period. There was also "menstrual pain" and a
marked decrease in milk production. This only lasted 3 days, and then with
some pumping and coaxing of the baby things seem to have returned to
normal. The mother is wondering if she will immediately get her periods
back because of the many health problems that she has (especiallly the
"hormone problem"), or if this is something else. I suggested retained
placental fragment, but it seems that it wouldn't cause problems so late.
There is no odor, or fever. Also, they are pushing Valium quite heavily
for the high blood pressure and she is not to keen on that. Any ideas for
the future situation for her? Thanks for you help.
Tschuss,
Merilee Reeder
PS. Please excuse the spelling errors, in my zeal to learn German, I didn't
even bring an English dictionary with me to CH.
I also don't have acces to Tom Hale's book yet, but am going to suggest
that the CBT here invests in getting one. THanks all again.
