How interesting that Karleen Gribble's eloquent post on the importance
of the breastfeeding *relationship* should follow Jennifer Tieman's
request for suggestions on helping a baby who was unhappy at daycare.
Karleen talks about the *The intimate social and physical contact that
occurs during breastfeeding * and how *breastfeeding provides calming,
comfort and analgesia to infants via lots of different ways. *
It is truly wonderful that this mother is providing her own milk to be
fed to her baby whilst she is at work, but it is not the same as her
actually being there to nurse. However wonderful the daycare, even if
it is provided by a close relative who loves the baby, there is an
intangible difference when it is compared to the care provided by the
mother. We may not be able to measure this difference scientifically,
but our babies know what it means to them.
What we need is to make it possible for mothers to care for their own
babies, or have them very close by, while they do other work too.
