I do not have any direct experience with blind moms and nursing but I did
think of some things that she might find helpful from my experience with
pottery and people with varying degrees of sight. (Ironically, on a ceramics
listserv I am on, they are having a discussion about this exactly, but with
clay instead of babies.) Please forgive my use of correct and
incorrect-having trouble thinking of better words.

-You position baby correctly at breast, then incorrectly, then correctly
again. Mom needs to know what that feels like. Always end with the correct
way.

-Have her describe to you in as much detail as possible what she notices
when baby is nursing correctly and when is not correct.

-As with any new mom, too much information is overkill and overwhelming. I
have found that I sometimes overtalk when someone has sight problems. Just
remember, she is blind and not stupid.

I am sure you will help her get on track quickly, if she hasn't already
figured it out by the next time she sees you. :-)
Sincerely,
Nikki Simmons LLLL
