Dear All,
         My unit is currently about to implement a consent form for use when
an infant is to receive other than breast milk. Although our committment to
baby friendly practice will fortunately mean these forms will see little
use, I still have some reservations about adopting them. Apart from cringing
at the thought of yet more paper work and yet more fear based practice, I
remember recently being prompted by something written on lactnet (the
archives weren`t much help) to think about what constitutes a true informed
consent in terms of formula usage.Informed consent can`t just involve an
understanding of the ability of formula to undermine breast feeding, but
where do we start and stop with regard to the ever growing list of other
potential nasties that artificial feeds entail. What if we forget to mention
the one potential sequalae that ensues? I find myself resisting the decision
to adopt these forms, and am interested in others attitudes both for and
against so that I might reflect further on this issue.
