I am wondering whether I missed something. Had a query from a mother
whose PHN had cautioned her that her 10 month old, healthy, happy
child who is just starting to get interested in other foods than
breastmilk, must not consume more than 500 ml breastmilk daily, as
more than this will replace iron-fortified cereals in the child's
diet. According to the PHN the mother should restrict the child's
access to her breast, and make her eat more cereal. The PHN had no
advice for how to check to see how many ml the child was taking.
I am accustomed to appallingly bad information coming from PHNs,
unfortunately, but this is the first time I've heard actual numbers
being tossed around. I suggested mother find out why the PHN is
concerned, i.e. ask the PHN which signs of ill health she sees in the
child, and request a) a copy of the official guidelines for infant and
young child feeding for Norway, which the PHN had neglected to provide
her with, and possibly b) a blood test for anemia if the PHN can make
a convincing case for the need to perform one on the child.

Maximum 500 ml breastmilk/24 hours at 10 months? What the ****?
