Thank you for this response Marsha! We need to focus on helping IBCLC
candidates find mentors to help them acquire clinical hours. Fortunately,
credits are much easier to accumulate (though they can get expensive) than
they used to be. I'm finding that candidates are looking to work or
volunteer as a Lactation Intern and can't get time in any setting.

I work in a Health Department and would love to set up rotations similar to
what nursing students complete. Candidates need experience in multiple
settings which will also help them determine in which area they prefer to
work. From what I'm told, it can be difficult to get permission to shadow,
intern or work and gather clinical hours particularly in a hospital setting
where they already have many students shadowing and doing rotations.

>>>>I am confused as to what you are trying to accomplish. Are you creating
another certificate program for Tricare coverage? An RN with 20 hours of
lactation education is still only prepared to handle basic breastfeeding
issues. Who will they refer to for complex and complicated situations? Why
not provide the 90 hours of lactation education, create an avenue for
acquiring the clinical hours, and steer people to the college level courses
that they need or even provide scholarships for these courses. 20 hours of
lactation education is nice but cannot cover in depth what practitioners
need to know, especially if they intend to care for medically complex
mothers and babies.>>>>>
